Trusting a VPN company with your personal location data is rarely as simple as we would like to think. Hundreds of VPN companies compete for our attention with their fancy words, and to make matters worse, everyone has some new fancy term to offer. To simplify our decision-making process, We have tested more than fifty VPN providers, cut through the noise and compared two major VPN provider’s offering against each other. Because, why to risk your privacy data with a VPN company who isn’t established yet. Finale is between NordVPN vs. PureVPN. We will see what each has to offer and ultimately, decide which is better for the average user.
|Dedicated Bandwidth for some type of application and stable connection for everything.||Fast, Stable connections|
|Second most servers among VPN providers||Servers in more than 140 countries|
|Highly customizable security||Lots of advanced security options|
|Able to unblock major streaming services abroad.||Have customizable option for streaming services too.|
|Too many customization options for everything.||Designed with novices in mind|
|Yearly||Quarterly (Three Months)|
|Special Offer||75% off a three year plan||73% discount on annual plan|
|Highest price per month||$11.95||$10.95|
|Lowest price per month||$3.71||$4.16|
|Money-back gurantee||30 days||31 days|
From the chart above, we can clearly notice, NordVPN believes in serving customers with a long term subscription mode. Even though we see a monthly subscription model available, but clearly with price standpoint, they are favouring customers with longer subscription duration. PureVPN on the other hand is offering two subscriptions, which are under the year, and it’s max subscription is for a year. Hence, PureVPN is trying to balance between customers with short commitment as well as long term.
Both of the VPN services are fairly priced in my opinion, with just a dollar’s difference between them on their monthly plan. On the annual plan PureVPN takes a swing though, with building substantial gap of $10. If we compare them at two year cost, which is the highest subscription NordVPN offers, gap again closes with NordVPN sitting at $89 vs PureVPN at $99.90
If we compare the money-back guarantee for these VPN, both of them are offering considerable long term money-back. In my opinion that’s a risk free assessment for a customer, if they want to try their services. Though PureVPN gives a day longer money-back gurantee than NordVPN, that hardly makes a difference. Simply because after 30 days, customer will have fairly good understanding of the service, and we can clearly see it’s a competition gimmick.
|Allowed Devices at once||6||10|
|Operating system support||Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS||Windows, MacOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Linux, iOS|
|Additional install available||Routers, set-top boxes||Routers, set-top boxes|
|Split Tunneling allowed?||No||Yes|
|Freebies||Malware-protection, Ad-blocker, Browser extensions, Automatic wifi protection||Malware-protection, Ad-blocker, Browser extensions, Kodi addon|
PureVPN takes a marginal upper hand with features, with it’s official Kodi addon. This addon allows you to stream safely on “just-enough-OS” systems like LibreELEC and OpenELEC, without messing around with third party services. Another important factor to notice is Split tunneling, if you have need for it. Split tunneling enables you to allow some application to bypass vpn and interact directly on internet. NordVPN doesn’t allow split tunneling for different application, however, it does have browser extension to use similar functionality just for browser.
For freebies, both of them offer very similar functionality.
|Netflix||Allows US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Netherlands||US, UK|
|Hulu||US, Japan||US, Japan|
|Amazon Prime Video||Yes||Yes|
Both of these services have wide capability to unblock, huge range of streaming services. NordVPN takes the lead here, and reliably unblock BBC iPlayer. Adding to it, NordVPN allows country specific Netflix subscriptions.
NordVPN takes the lead here, and works seamless in China. But given the difficulty in installing vpn in China, users are advised to install NordVPN before landing in china. PureVPN on the other hand, falls flat and doesn’t work, due to heavy chinese interference.
Servers and Performance
NordVPN and PureVPN take different approach to serve customer needs. NordVPN focuses on providing multiple servers in same region, giving users multiple servers to choose from. PureVPN on the other hand went for covering as many countries as possible. So, if you are looking to tunnel via some of the little known countries PureVPN might be a better choice. But if you want stability and speed NordVPN takes the edge. Infact, NordVPN is the fastest VPN we have tested so far, with an average speed of 115 Mbps. Average for PureVPN for us, came at just 37 Mbps.
|VPN Protocols||OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, IKEv2, NordLynx||OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP, IKEv2|
|Control Channel Encryption||RSA-4096||RSA-2048|
|App security||Kill Switch||Kill Switch|
|DNS Status||Private DNS||Private DNS|
Portfolio from both VPN providers is again similar here. Though PureVPN supports SSTP additionally, it hardly is a bonus. On the other hand, NordLynx protocol from NordVPN, based on Wireguard, is widely considered as the next big thing in VPN security world.
Encryption levels of both VPN Providers are sitting at 256-bit AES encryption, which is practically impossible to crack as of now. Twice the length of RSA key however, does add bonus to NordVPN, making it even harder to crack.

|Annonymous payment options||Bitcoin, Ripple, Etherium||None|
NordVPN operates out of Panama vs PureVPN is based in Hong Kong. With no data-retention laws in Panama, it’s ideal for any VPN company. Technically, Hong Kong doesn’t have it either, but we all saw how china imposed couple of it’s laws in Hong-Kong recently, and barred a lot of it’s politicians, which makes us question about that law in Hong-Kong. Of-course, we all know how china is with internet data retention and internet censorship.
NordVPN keeps no logs. Nothing, including your source IP address, timestamp, data volume or sites visited is recorded. PureVPN on the other hand claims to log none of them as well, but in 2017, company provided a user’s IP address and timestamps during an FBI investigation. So, I leave the claim of PureVPN at user’s discretion, because if once a breach of trust happens with a company, makes it very difficult to trust. Specifically more if it deals with security and privacy.
|Average email response time||14 hours||3 hours|
|Searchable knowledge base||Yes||Yes|
Even though we are concluding NordVPN as winner, let’s be clear. Both of the providers are providing high-quality VPN services, with a lot to offer. The reason we are leaning towards NordVPN is simply because we find it better suited for Average user.
NordVPN is the fastest available VPN provider, giving you freedom to do whatever you’d like online. It’s able to unblock most popular streaming services, and even works in China, which has reputation of huge internet censorship. Although PureVPN covers most of the countries, NordVPN has more servers in the region making it’s service faster.
NordVPN allows you to purchase it’s service and pay them completely anonymous, and has proven record of not maintaining any privacy/recognizable data of customer, unlike 2017 case of PureVPN. That shows us, company actually takes it’s commitment of privacy seriously.
Another one to notice here is, even though PureVPN offers stress-free service, NordVPN provides dedicated servers for downloading torrents making it ideal for torrent users.
